I don’t know about you, but this summer was the equivalent of sacrificing yourself when you go to the movies with your spouse/partner. It’s pretty dreadful, but in the end, you really don’t have a choice but to watch it. At some point, you are going to be asked about details and you are in a world of hurt if you can’t recall any of them, now throw social media into that equation…
The tragedies were more numerous than ever before and the word-of-mouth broadcasting through various forms of media was the equivalent of being shanked in prison. No one could have predicted any of it. Maybe Nostradamus, but then again anyone can be correct all the time when you speak and write with such dubious vague dialog.
It was an off-season that included a “meh” hockey draft and a less than stellar free agency class. You can’t blame a guy for just taking the summer off and completely not caring. After all is said and done, I don’t think anyone really needed daily updates on Crosby/Malkin health status (I sure as hell didn’t) and the “Pegula Parades” in Western NY were already in full swing prior to the end of the last season.¬† In short, It wasn’t much of an off-season to care about. I sympathize with the family and friends of the deceased in the Lokomtiv tragedy, I sympathize with the family and friends of those players that have taken their own lives (accidental or not) but all of the topics that have arisen from all of these events created far too many soap boxes and and far too many preachers¬† standing on them. As if the internet didn’t have enough of them…
Bottom line: These tragedies occur far more often than everyone wants to talk about and just like the rest of the human race, we will survive as we pick our brothers and sisters effected by all of these events…. because tragedies seem to help people overlook personal differences.
Last year was personal scheduling nightmare for me, this season has worked in my favor with careful planning to add more weekly content for Metz….snark, underhanded and back handed slaps are to be expected. At least, in a more consistent manner.¬† I have no intention of focusing directly on the Penguins, I have no intention of focusing on the Sabres. Just hockey..with a smidgeon of metal music.
*Pulls out the soap box, stands tall facing the masses*
If you didn’t get a chance to see the Big 4 Show in Yankee Stadium on 9/14/11, You probably the greatest metal show you’ll ever have seen in your respective lives. I have to admit, the drunk guy behind Metz and I, was actually correct in his assessment. It wasn’t some festival showcase, it was the forefathers of Metal, all on stage, all in one night.

P.S. – I would be remiss in not mentioning a quick stop in the NHL Offices in New York. Thanks, to Metz and Shawn Roarke for making that happen… Now give me back my Nordiques, Gary!
