Penguins Cup Finals to be played Saturday at Mellon Arena

The PIHL High School League Championships will be played Saturday at Mellon Arena following the Penguins game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Penguins Cup Champions from each category (A, AA, AAA) will take on the three Flyers Cup champions on April 1st.

Top Local High School Teams Battle For PIHL Titles Following Pens-Flyers Game

The Penguins Cup finals, presented by 84 Lumber, featuring the top teams in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL), will take place on Saturday at Mellon Arena following the Pittsburgh Penguins-Philadelphia Flyers game.

Defending Class A champion Mars will take on third-seeded Serra Catholic at 5 p.m. Mars is coming off a 7-3 defeat of Bishop McCort in the semifinals. Serra Catholic upset second-seeded Kittanning, 5-3, on Monday night.

Two-time Class AA state champion Greater Latrobe looks to capture a third consecutive Penguins Cup championship when it faces third-seeded West Allegheny at 7 p.m. The Wildcats posted a 7-2 victory over Peters Township on Monday. West Allegheny arrived in the finals following a 2-1 overtime win against Bishop Canevin on Tuesday.

In the nightcap in Class AAA, fourth-seeded Seneca Valley plays in its second straight final against eighth-seeded Canon McMillan at 9 p.m. Seneca Valley rode five Brandon Platt tallies to a 5-0 victory over Upper St. Clair in the semifinals. Canon McMillan upset defending champion Shaler, 6-5 in overtime, in a thrilling back-and-forth contest on Tuesday night.

All three games will be available for viewing on Comcast’s “Pens TV on Demand,” beginning April 4. Steve Mears and Jason Seidling will be calling all the action.

The three Penguins Cup champions will advance to the Pennsylvania High School Hockey Championship where they will take on the Flyers Cup champions. Those contests will take place on April 1 at Mellon Arena. The Class A game will begin at 11 a.m.; Class AA will drop the puck at 1:30 p.m.; and the Class AAA matchup will faceoff at 4 p.m.
