Malkamania Running Wild: A Thank You for the Past Few Weeks…

Cy with the the DVE Morning crew - Randy, Jim, Mike and Val

(Ed’s note: Cy has had a whirlwind few weeks that has seen him invited to Penguins practice where he received a heroes welcome from Dan Bylsma and the boys, been featured on the Jumbotron, the Penguins official site and multiple blogs and papers as they all covered his visit with the team. He has also been honored on the ice at the Consol Energy Center as part of the team’s “Hockey Fights Cancer” night, been invited to appear on the DVE morning show and has started writing a blog here at FTP… all of it would make for a pretty good year, but in Cy’s case it has all happened in less than a month… here he says thanks for all of the thoughts, prayers, and consideration that has come his way… enjoy! – Metz)

Well, it is Thursday, November 3, 2011 and I get ready to fly out tomorrow evening to join my friends Pat, Amy, and Bruce in Los Angeles.   I promised Amy I would hold a sign “McGUIRE” when they pick me up.   This will be my first time out to Los Angeles, The City of Light, as Jim Morrison used to say.  There I go again, another dig on my buddy Mike Richards.  This time, I’ll be tweeting as well.  Wonder what he’ll think of the “45 year old creep” this time around? I cannot wait to see his first look.  We’ll be a few rows behind the benches and I would not have it any other way, and of course, I do have a few signs.  They will be smaller, as the L.A. Kings have restrictions on size.  I’m sure that “Endless Love” will find its way out there.  I hope we bring back a win for you guys and that we have a great time doing it in the City of Light.  Hopefully I will be able to try an “In and Out Burger.”   If you guys have any suggestions hit me up before I leave on Friday.

I cannot put into words hanging out at practice with the Penguins.  Again, a great bunch of guys, which I touched on in a previous article… and then to be honored on Hockey Fights Cancer night on the ice; the cheers made me cry. Getting interviewed by my good friend Katie O’Malley, the outcome of the game –Malkamania striking in the shootout, and then having Hulk Hogan on the jumbotron saying “Whatcha gonna do when Malkamania runs wild on you?”  All of it made for a very tearful, but unforgettable moment. And yeah, I’m gonna  throw out a pic of my good buddy Keegan Szczerba dressing up like me for the game and bringing some great signs — another tear jerking moment for me.   I know the Pens will be in good hands in the up and coming years with him around.   And also the Root sports piece with Stan Savran and his nice comments.  Stan has always been a class act and a favorite of mine since he came to Pittsburgh.  He has been battling illness and I wish Stan nothing but the best.  Get well my friend.

Being on the DVE morning show has always been a fantasy of mine and that fantasy was reached the other day.   I’d like to thank Randy, Jim, Val and Mike for being so nice and having me on the radio where we had some fun on the air.  They always seem to have such a great time and I was glad to share it with them.

Also, I wanted to send a big thank you to Brian Gulish of the American Cancer society for letting me participate in the “Making Strides for Breast Cancer” walk.  It was an honor considering that a good friend of mine, Dori Minnis’ sister Denise, is fighting the fight with this cancer.  Please pray for her as she goes through her treatment.

I would also like to thank Brian Metzer for giving me the opportunity to do this.  I don’t know what was running through his mind when he even gave this a thought, but I’m glad he did.  I wonder if Todd Wyant, another contributor on FromThePoint, had anything to do with it since we both seem to tease each other with old Pens trivia.   Yes, there was a team before 1984, and I’m damn proud of it. Writing and being on the air were two dreams of mine.  Brian gave me the dream of writing and maybe one day I’ll get a shot at having a little gig on the radio (hockey only).  Again, let me thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Also a big shout out to Adam, Derek, and Stoosh from the Pensblog.  You guys are always posting my work and having me on your radio show.   I thank you for that, for all this time my friends!  As well as my new friends on the Pens Nation, Nick, Andy, Ken, Joe, Meg and Kiley!

Last but not least all of the friends on twitter and facebook who keep me sane since I cannot work due to my illness plus the added problems of the kidneys and the neuropathy of my hands and feet, which has been numb. Hopefully, I will get this back soon.

Next week I’ll be back with old time Penguin hockey, and I greatly appreciate those who take the time and stop by to read my columns.  Thank you again!
