GM’s Inbox with One Smug Pug and Doug McKenzie

on

As you know our resident kooks One Smug Pug and Doug McKenzie have an uncanny knack for intercepting communications between the Penguins’ own general manager Ray Shero and his peers around the league. Somehow they managed to grab this exchange with Petr Svoboda (Jaro Jagr’s agent)… enjoy! – Metz

Ray,

I want to assure you that Jaromir is serious about wanting to play in the NHL – and he’d love nothing more than to retire as part of the Penguins organization.

Petr,

As you know, we have been discussing this internally.  We have decided to submit a contract offer.  You will receive something tomorrow.

Ray,

Jaromir’s heart never really left Pittsburgh.  He’d love nothing more than to return there and play before cheering crowds.  He still loves the Penguins organization and would love to play for his old friend Mario once again.

Petr,

I recall Jaromir saying he’d play for the NHL minimum salary if Mario called him and asked.  Mario’s office is right down the hall – do you want me to get him?

Ray,

Words are words and that’s all in the past.  Let’s focus on the fact that Jaromir really wants to play in the NHL again and he’d love to play for your team.

Ray,

I have received your offer and will discuss it with my client.  Again, I assure you his desire is to play in Pittsburgh and this will be a very tough decision for him.  Money is not his primary motivation to return to the NHL.  He wants to be a difference maker for any winning team that is willing to pay him.

Petr,

When can we expect a decision?  We’d like to know in advance if we’ll need to investigate other options on Friday.  Can we have a final decision by tomorrow?

Ray,

Jaromir is flying to the United States tomorrow.  I’ll have an answer for you as soon as he’s off the plane and gives me a call which should be early evening.  This is a very tough decision for him.

Petr,

I got your voicemail.  I thought you were up in Quebec, so why were you calling from a 313 number?

Have you heard from Jaromir yet?

Ray,

A 313 number?  Why would I be calling from Detroit?

I have no idea where he is.  I last spoke to him before he boarded his flight and he told me he’d have an answer after landing.  Apparently his flight never landed or something.  I know it seems strange in this modern day of email, smart phones, and internet that I can’t find my client but it is totally true.  As soon as I hear from him, I’ll have an answer to you.

I’ll have to get Jaromir’s answer to you tomorrow.  Your offer is very enticing but this is a very difficult decision for him.  I promise you’ll hear from us tomorrow.

Ray,

Jaromir is having a difficult time making this decision.  We’d like to discuss this offer with you further.  His heart is in Pittsburgh – it really is – but this is such a tough call for him to make.  Since he can’t sign until noon tomorrow, what’s the rush in getting an answer today?

Petr,

It seems to me that if his heart was really in Pittsburgh and he has such a strong desire to play here, it shouldn’t be a difficult decision for him.  We wish you and Jaromir the best of luck with your difficult negotiations with Detroit…I mean, difficult decision.

    Nice work boys….

I have a feeling the tool who is Jagr’s manager has just as much to do with this as Jagr himself. He was a tool on the ice and is one off it.
