A Pugs Eye View: Free Agent Frenzy – Day 1

on

By Todd Wyant

July 1st – I want to say that I was surprised by the departure of Sergei Gonchar, but I wasn’t. I want to say that I am surprised that he went to the Ottawa Senators, but I wasn’t. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly, and it doesn’t always, Ottawa had chased after Gonchar five years ago, prior to signing with the Penguins. Well, they have him now. I was surprised by exactly how fast Ottawa got the deal in and gave him that extra year that he wanted. really. It was not as fast as the “Marty Biron to the Rangers” signing but it didn’t come too long after. It had been released later that Marty was given permission to talk with teams about a contract. Speakng of Marty Biron, I REALLY have to find out if any other player has played for every team in New York State before (inner hockey nerd has been revived as of late)

For weeks now, i’ve been pouring over possible players with some other notable fellows that could end up in Pittsburgh. Michalek, Volchenkov, Tallinder, Jurcina, Morrisson, Lydman, etc. Some were stretches, some  were based on what they could add. It was foolish to think that GMRS wouldn’t make a splash, there was just too much of what the Pens needed available. Solid defensemen. Sadly, a lot of teams needed them as well.

Just as the dust was settling and the realization of Sergei’s departure was taking hold…

BAM!

-Pittsburgh Penguins- Signed defenseman Zbynek Michalek to a five-year contract

What a stunner! I felt like I just hit by the BFG (videogame nerd) that was just fired by Ulf Samuelsson

I couldn’t help it. A true defensive d-man, in Pittsburgh. I giggled…

Before I could really just sit back, relax and feel great about this signing…

Ray Shero was camping the spawn point….

BFG’ed AGAIN!

-Pittsburgh Penguins- signed defenseman Paul Martin to a five-year contract.

I was expecting  something entirely different yesterday, but I am in no way disappointed. GMRS is holding to the standard of keeping the middle ice strong from goal to goal.

Welcome aboard, gentlemen…Welcome to Pittsburgh

Bring on the 2010-2011 Season

-Other Notes-

The wife LOVED Gonchar and was saddened by the news of his new home in Ottawa but having to tell her that her former favorite Pen, Johan Hedberg, was a Devil now……

I went looking for James Cameron to start filming Titanic 2.

Colby Armstrong gets $3 Million a year from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Don’t get me wrong, the Leafs are my second love to the Pens and I am a fan of Colby but…..

Really? Olli Jokinen is having a LONG discussion with his agent today (Calgary-signed forward Olli Jokinen to a two-year contract.) also for $3 million a year.

Seriously, Marty Biron is starting to get a reputation as a Puck Bunny in New York State (Buffalo, Islanders and now the Rangers)

Volchenkov and Tallinder head for NJ – Who cares?

An aging Brodeur does…

Philly stuffing their cap space like a fat kid with cupcakes….skipping nutrition altogether.

I don’t think Leighton is the multi-vitamin you were looking for.

***I’m an unapologetic hockey fan who happens to appreciate the Pittsburgh Penguins more than 29 other teams, a fine Pennsylvania boy who was raised in the ‘Burgh. I currently reside in Western NY chattering endlessly about hockey, torturing Sabres fan any chance I get.

Likes- Hockey, Music, Pugs, Pittsburgh, People with Humor, Twitter and casual strolls in the moonlight while mocking the Philadelphia Flyers

Dislikes- Bad people, excuses, Humorless life forms, MySpace and casual strolls in the daylight crying over a Penguins loss
