Around the Rink – your afternoon skate around the league

Crosby goes Around the Net to save his team's evening!

Thanks to all of you who popped into the Versus chat last night! I will be running additional chats for Versus on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week…hope to see you all there. We have a great hockey chat with folks from all over the league, last night we had a great mix of Sens/Pens fans, as well as folks who were watching the other games that were going on at the time. The playoffs are an exciting time of year and it is always fun to interact with folks who are passionate about talking some puck!

I will be posting the links to the chats here each day, so keep an eye out for them.

On to your daily trip Around the Net!

First off, here is Shelly Anderson’s story on the Andy Sutton’s hit on Jordan Leopold. This is the kind of situation that could make this Pens/Sens series a classic. The two teams should be fired up and ready for some physical play tomorrow…

Penguins angry over hit

Here is Molinari’s game recap… it is sort of a tradition here to post Dave’s thoughts following each Penguins game, so why stop now! In case you are unaware, the Penguins knotted their best of seven series with the Sens are 1-1 last night at Mellon Arena…

Dave’s take

The Tribune review gives Pittsburgh the news it has been waiting for… are Vlad and Nat Malkin coming to town?? As I have told you guys, Visa problems have been the hold up on their arrival…however, it isn’t their own Visas that are in question. It is the Visa of Malkin’s brother Denis. Denis hasn’t been to the States since 2007 and the government has yet to get him cleared to make the trip. Here’s hoping things are supposed to be resolved soon…

The Malkins are coming!

Rob Rossi addressed the “Bronx cheer” that Marc Andre Fleury got from the capacity crowd at Mellon Arena last night… Rossi says that the Penguins goaltender probably deserves better than that from Penguins Nation… though a part of me agrees, I also see why the fans would have felt obliged to do that. You have to take the good and the bad when you are pro athlete in this town and his performance in game one, combined with a goal :18 seconds in had people a bit worried. They were strongly behind their netminder the rest of the way…

This piece from NHL.com talks about how the Staal line really stepped up in game two and was able to limit the Senators opportunities. That is the type of performance the Penguins are going to need if they are going to make any kind of extended run this year.

Staal Line at its best

The Sharks knocked off the Avalanche in overtime last night to even their series at 1 game a piece… Devin Setoguchi was the hero scoring the winner 5:32 into overtime.

Zetterberg notched a hat-trick to lead the Wings to a 7-4 victory against Phoenix last night. The series is now tied at 1-1.

If you ask me, Brian Burke has the Leafs on the right track. Sure some folks are doubting him, especially after the trading for Phil Kessel gave the Bruins the second pick in the draft…however, it is hard to argue with that trade, as it netted him a potential 50 goal scorer who no where near his prime. Though the Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full swing, Burke is hard at work on getting ready for next year…

Another team that is hard at work on preparing for next year is the Edmonton Oilers… but before work gets underway on next season, they are trying to determine who to select first overall in the NHL Entry Draft.

Last for today… the Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins return home down 2-0 in their series against Albany… the Parent Pens are doing them any favors, having recalled both Brad Thiessen and Ben Lovejoy.
